It seems like this happens every time I try to rent something from them. Unlike previous times, though, this time I was trying to book something in an urban environment, not the rural places where I’ve had issues in the past. Hoped it would be better, but I guess not.
So yesterday I booked an “auto-transport” online for pickup tomorrow. Went through a couple suggested pick up points before I found one that didn’t say it was unavailable. I missed a call a couple minutes later, called them back and just got a computer, figured it was just an automated response to the booking. The email came in a couple minutes later confirming the booking. Whatever.
Checked my voicemail this morning, and there’s a message time stamped before the email came in saying they didn’t have an “auto-transport” available at that location, so I’d have to go pick it up about an hour’s drive out of the city in completely the wrong direction. So I call them back.
I get an actual person (after calling the same number I called back before?) and they confirm that there are no “auto-transports” available anywhere closer. Fine, whatever, I’ll do the extra driving. Except then I ask what the hours are at that place, cause it’s a small town so there’s a chance it’s not open until noon. Well, turns out this place isn’t open at all on Sundays. And the lady confirms I can’t pick up a trailer at a closed location. So I change my booking for just a tow dolly, which will be available at a location very near my original pickup choice.
A few minutes later, I get a confirmation email, saying I now have an “auto-transport” booked for the new new pickup location. Which is a gas station.
So I’m going to show up there, and hopefully they have something I can use to relocate a vehicle.
But seriously, how hard is it to put a bar code sticker on each trailer with a serial number, and scan it in/out whenever it’s dropped off or leaves? Like, really? It’s 20-freaking-15 already!

It is nuts. And even if they have the vehicle, that may not be enough. Last time I rented a van, it took them forever to find the keys (shockingly, they were in the key drop). Inventory management doesn’t seem like a strong suit.

They refused our rental for the same thing, and were more interested in people renting vans, at the location near me.

They probably make more money on the vans. But the trailer rentals have got to be a much better return on investment. Serious, buy the thing for five grand and then make people pay $100 (after insurance) to rent it for a bit? Fifty rentals and you broke even.

U-Hauld is so screwed up. Last time I rented a truck to go one way from Michigan to Florida, I did it with 2 weeks notice and confirmed it every 3 or 4 days. No problem they said. When I got there on a Monday. They had no truck. They never called or attempted any form of communication. This was at a U-Haul owned facility.

Uhaul really does suck. Unfortunately they’re the only company who will rent you just a trailer, so they have no competition. I’ll never rent one of their trucks again, that’s for sure. Their maintenance is atrocious.

Well if you just brought one then you wouldn’t have to deal with U-Haul.
Sorry but trying to get someone else to spend money to make your life easier doesn’t sound like a recipe for success,(To Me.)
Is it frustrating, Yes! But your still saving money.

After renting a van and getting a 12 foot box truck as a replacement for the same reason I vowed to never yes them again. I’m a penske man for now on. I don’t care if it’s an extra 20 minute drive for me.

For me though it would unfortunately be an extra six hour drive. The advantage UHaul has is that there’s a location in just about every other town out here, so I don’t have to drive three hours back into the city to drop the trailer off again. Although if I do actually get the trailer I want, this might mean that it sticks around in my town. I don’t know if I’d need it for a while, but it might stay there.

Unfortunately I don’t need a trailer often enough to justify buying one. This is the second time in the last two years I’ve rented one.
My problem with U-Haul is that they advertise a service that they often fail to deliver. I can understand having issues with booking at the last minute, but that doesn’t mean they still shouldn’t have their own crap sorted out so they can actually do what they promise. The reason I booked at short notice was because last time, despite assuring me they had what I asked for, when I got there they’d rented it to someone else. I figured at the last minute they’d be more likely to still have the trailer there.
